My computer is already set to automtically update - Dell
said it was something that I needed to purchase???

If you are describing it correctly as a Windows XP service pack, it is
available from Windows update. There has only been one service pack so far.

Service Pack 1 and all other updates are also available on CD, directly from
Microsoft, at no charge. (You will probably be charged a nominal amount for
shipping.) The CDs are intended for users with dialup connections, which
make updates a very long download.
