When i click on 'My Documents', 'My computer' or any other windows explroer
window, or the search option or most other general functions, it doesn't
load, and the system partially crashes, leaving the mouse operational and
some programs. If i then tell the computer to shut down, the selected
operations will appear for a second before the computer closes itself down.
Any help greatly appreciated

Also: if i go to the task manager and end an 'internet explorer' task, the
selected windows explorer will appear.

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time
things worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the
malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what
programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?

Be sure the computer is clean:

In your case, I'd answer the Second Question first.

I've used a Norton antivirus, 'ad-aware se' and the registry mechanic to
check for errors. Norton returned some spyware but essentially nothing
particularly harmful appeared.

My internet explorer does a similar thing. I'm working on firefox now.

I downloaded the new IE7, but this encounters the same problem whenever
loaded.

You're still not giving us enough information about your system so you
can get focused help. Since you feel the Second Question has already
been answered, then what about the First Question? What changed between
the time things worked and the time they didn't?

If you are sure the computer is clean, then either something has changed
in the software or you possibly are having hardware problems. You
mention "registry mechanic"; perhaps you used this registry cleaner
(and most techs like me don't recommend registry cleaners) and what you
did broke something. If you think this is the case, if the registry
cleaner has an "undo" feature you should use it.

I'm sorry, but there's no way for me to give you more specific advice
without knowing more. Here is a link that will help you with what
details to include: http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm

Here is a link to general hardware troubleshooting steps:
