Windows Explorer vs File Manager

In older versions of Windows when we used File Manager instead of
Windows Explorer it was possible to rename several files
simultaneously, e.g. change the file extension.

I've yet to find a way to do this in WE.

Would FM work in a Win XP environment, and if so where can I download a
copy?

Or does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can change the file
extension in WE without having to do it one file at a time?

Here's a page that discusses how to do that from a command prompt:

There is a way to rename multiple files in Windows Explorer, but it's
good only for giving many files the same name suffixed with a number
in parens (abc(1).gif, abc(2).gif, ...). I don't think that's what you
want to do.

Oh geez, that page gives a Unix script. It won't work in Windows.
There's probably a way to do this in a Windows *.cmd file, but I don't
see one appearing quickly. MCR's pointer to ExplorerXP looks like a
good bet.
