Windows explorer strange behaviour

The common tasks view in Windows explorer used to work fine on my new PC -
But recently has started behaving very strangely.

If I (left) click on a task pane hyperlink, the explorer window will
generally freeze and all explorer windows stop responding. Typically I have
to use task manager to close them - and then the desktop has to respawn.
(Switching views in the 'View>Explorer Bar' menu sometimes also does the same
thing).

Strangely the "View as a Slideshow" hyperlink always works for picture
directories,
and for any hyperlinks that have a right click menu you can still use 'right
click+open'... Yet a left click will cause explorer to crash.

Wierd - and I have spent a long time trying to fix it, but to no avail......

Anyone else come across this?

I've had spyware problems on other PCs and tracked them down -
this would not however be spyware, since it happened on a clean, freshly
installed system - only things on the PC at the stage it happened were
Microsoft Office, Norton Internet Security and the latest Windows updates...

Probably some sort of subtle boot-up conflict, which I keep on hoping to
find a fix (registry or otherwise) for....
