Hello,

I am experiencing a sorting by filename problem in
explorer.exe.

Some files are sporadically out of the proper sort order.
For example:

2000010120000201a.jpg
2000010120000201b.jpg
2000010120000201c.jpg
2003010120030201a.jpg
2003010120030201a.jpg
2003010120030201b.jpg
2001010120010201c.jpg
2001010120010201b.jpg
2001010120010201c.jpg

Notice that the files beginning with 2003 are out of
sequence for no apparent reason. Others I've talked to
have experienced this with Windows 2000 as well.

Does anyone know of a bug fix for this problem?

Thanks,

Robert

Explorer is displaying the files on how you have them
sorted/saved in your Graphics Program, probably in an
album by name (alphabetical). You can sort them by Name,
Date, Size, Type or Description. Change your sort
to "Date" and it should display them properly.

Hi

This might be relevant:

Incorrect Sort Order in Windows Explorer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;318872

To change the sort order back to Pre-XP:

Upgrade to SP1 if you haven't already, and then import the registry file found
here:

Change the Sort Order back to Pre-XP (Line 107)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and
answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by right
clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

The machine needs to be rebooted for these changes to be effective. This
registry setting is available in Windows XP Service Pack 1.

The Knowledge Base Article - 318872 "Windows Explorer
Incorrectly Sorts Files and Folders with 10 or More
Consecutive Numerals" sounds exactly like that's what's
causing my problem.

I will also apply the registry setting (KB - 319827) to
revert back to traditional string sorting as I'm more
familiar with viewing files that way.

Thanks a lot for your help! This was driving me crazy.

In XP fields in file names that are sequences of numeric digits are
treated as numeric values. THere was a problem where the numbers were
larger than a certain amount that was fixed in SP1, but even so, these
would be stretching things. I suggest that you turn off this facility -
Use TweakUI - one of the XP Powertoys from (if you have installed XP
SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

(If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe
but does not IIRC have this specific control - I think that possibility
came in with the fix referred to at SP1)

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP On its Explorer page there is a box for 'Use intuitive
filename sorting' - uncheck it and apply
