windows explorer in xp

Some of my settings got changed somehow, and now Explorer
has a mind of its own. The Windows Picture and Fax Viewer
and Paint were the defaults, but Paint seems to have
disappeared. And when I double click on a thumbnail, it
says the "File does not have a program associated with it
for performing this action. Create an association in the
Folder Options Control Panel." When I assign Windows
Picture and Fax Viewer to a jpg or jpeg file, the file
still will not open.

Also can no longer double click to open a file in the
right pane, opens a search box with that wagging dog.
This also makes it impossible to burn data CDs in Roxio.
Help!!!
