When I enable 'Remember each folder's view settings' and
then add/rename folders/subfolders, the type and view
settings for other folders/subfolders (not all - seems to
be random) are changed. Is this a bug in Explorer? -
will it be fixed any time soon? Thanks.

yes - many times - this has been an ongoing problem for many weeks now - and I can't find anything on it - but there have been problems reported on other functions in the Folder Options - View window (e.g. 'Apply to All Folders')
Thanks - david

just found the answer to my problem - look back to message of 1/28/2004 in this newsgroup - Windows Explorer, as shipped, only remembers views for 400 folders, but this can be increased.
