Windows Explorer (FileManager) Slow

I have a new install of Windows XP SP2 that runs as advertised except for
Windows Explorer or File Manager. The Left side of Explorer showing the
various folders responds immediately but the right side showing the file
details in the selected folder takes up to 3 seconds to respond. It does
not matter if it is one file or a hundred. I have tried Magellan Explorer
and it responds immediately for both Folders and Files. I've run several
different performance measuring programs on the system and they all tell me
things are great or at least the performance is what I would have expected.
Therefore, I don't think it is a hardware issue. (Go ahead tell me I'm in
the wrong forum. I have posted this problem in several different forums and
have yet to get a response!!) I have also tried MSConfig in the Diagnostic
Startup mode and the slow response from Window Explorer is still there!
Short of re-installing from scratch does anybody have an idea of what is
going on. I guess I can just buy Magellan and forget about Windows Explorer
on this system but....it's getting personal!

Is the system an older computer? Do you have a virus scanner that's on full
time? My KAV slows browsing through Explorer to a halt even on a decent
computer. It raises the CPU level up to the 70% range. I've learned to deal
with it as opposed to fight it. I'd rather have my anti-virus running and
load it slowly than to have it load quickly and never know what I'm going to
get. Like your case it works fine with other shell tools and it's much
quicker here, it only seems to slow down Explorer. Rather than purchase a
new tool I've just learned to cope. "It's not a bug, it's a feature."

I don't think so!! I have two computers, both running the same software
(including ZoneAlarm Pro and Norton Anti-Virus 2004) and the old slower ASUS
P4PE MB (2.53 GHz Processor) runs Explorer much faster than the new ASUS
P5P800 MB (3.2 GHz Processor with dual channel memory, 8x Video card etc.).
I have tried the new system with ZoneAlarm and Norton Anti-Virus disabled
and it made little or no difference in Explorer response time. In fact, I
have tried the system in diagnostic startup mode and it did not make any
difference. Something else is going on with WinXP and the newer hardware.

Current computer that I'm on has an AMD Pro3200A+ w/1 GB DDR PC2100 - with
KAV running it takes almost four seconds for Windows Explorer to load drive
X: (saved data drive) and without KAV running it loads in only about half
that time. With a third party application it loads nearly immediately. It's
like this on all the PCs in the house.
