Thank you Will and Mark.
My installation of WinXP SP-2 has developed a very annoying fault.
As part of my security stratagy I use Password Depot installed on a USB
flash disk which is only installed if a password is required. The Flash disk
is always plugged into the same port a my 4-port USB hub and configured as
drive 'K' using Disk Management console. When I no longer required the
FlashDisk I would high-light it in explorer and select 'Eject' and the
drive would disappear from the list of drives in the explorer window when
the Flashdisk is removed..
Recently several problems have occured which may be linked.
1. Windows Explorer has started to crash with the "Windows Explorer has
experienced a problem and has to shut-down" message. I have chosen to Report
this to Microsoft on two occasions and also kept a print-out of the fault
report which is of no use to me.
2.When I click on {Start} the start box opens and the top left part, where
the anchored programs are, comes up with two entries for each program. I can
get rid of this by:-
Right click {Start},{Properties} and then {OK] and the Start box is back to
normal.
3.The most annoying problem appears when I plug in my Flash Disk with
Passport Depot installed and which I have set to be drive 'K' in Disk
Management.
The first time I plug it in after start-up it appears in Windows Explorer as
'K'. If I remove it ,after using "Safely Remove Hardware" icon, the entry in
Explorer still exists as a Removable Disk, but doesn't exist in Disk Manager
or My Computer. It used to disappear from Explorer.
If I plug the flash disk in again it will take another drive letter, a new
drive letter each time.
I've tried running DiskCheck, sfc and re-installing Internet Explorer but to
no avail.
I could, but would prefer not to, put the system back using a Ghost image
but since this installation has been very reliable , de-frag regularly, keep
registry slim using Easy-cleaner, windows up-dates, Zone Alarm, Avg, Windows
Defender, Ad-aware and most recently Spyware Doctor.
