This is a right pain but if I click once to select a particular movie file
(it doesn't do it on all files), or do a thumbnails list the files in a
directory where the file is stored, I get a

Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry
for the inconvenience.

error message

When I click on the More Information I get
AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2800.1221 ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 0000000

Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this as I've tried various
searches on websites etc to no avail.

Also, when I try the Help files, whenever I move my mouse over a selection I
get

An error has occured in the script on this page. The error is
'xmldoc.documentElement' is null or not an object.

This occurred ages ago and as I don't use Help very often, I carried on as
normal, and wondered if it could be anything to do with the error.

Any help would be very gratefully appreciated.

I have installed SP1 if that is any help to anyone !!!!

Thanks, I've tried it but it doesn't seem to work. I'll reboot the PC and
see if that makes a difference.

:D

Nope, still getting the error message....

New install of XP may be required methinks !!!

I've been checking the windows directory, and I don't know if it makes any
difference, but I appear to have 2 help directories.

The usual Windows\Help but also
Windows\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR

I've tried reinstalling XP Plus Pack to see if this made any difference but
it still won't work.

Any ideas?

Deffstar,
Thanks, I've tried it but it doesn't seem to work. I'll reboot the PC and
see if that makes a difference.

Here are a few things to try:

1) Make sure that you have the latest versions of the help viewer
components installed by applying Critical Update 811630, available
from here:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=811630

2) Use MJ's Help Diagnostics to check that all the help viewer
components are properly installed and registered.

http://helpware.net/downloads/index.htm#MJs

(The only section of the MJ's Help Report that is relevant to your
problem is the one headed "HTML Help Run-time Components".)

3) Delete or rename the file hh.dat, which you should find in this
directory:

\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft\HTML
Help

The hh.dat file stores user-specific information on all the HTML Help
files on your system (favourite topics, search history, etc.), and can
cause the files to misbehave if it has somehow been corrupted. Windows
will create a new version of hh.dat when you next open any .chm file.

4) Empty your Temporary Internet Files directory. A full TIF directory
can cause HTML Help files to misbehave.

5) See the following pages for further guidance on how to resolve
XP-specific help problems:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_h.htm
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/fixwinxphelp.htm

Hi Pete,

I have tried one or two things before, but I will try the other suggestions
you make and would like to thank you very much for all your time and kind
help.

Thanks

DF

Just checked MJ's diagnostics and that was okay. There isn't a hh.dat file
on my PC anywhere. Most of the Help files are in a directory called
PCHEALTH\HELPCTR.

The only file is index.dat which I renamed but it still came up with the
error !!!!

I even tried reinstalling the help but I tried that before and it didn't
work before and didn't again !!!!

Reinstall required methinks.

In addition to this message, I did find the hh.dat file and renamed it. I
then rerun help and it still won't work.

Oh well !!
