Windows Explorer starts up fine. Browses fine. But whenever I click on
a file opened by Windows Media Player, Windows Explores says it must
close. I then have to alt-ctl-del and end Windows Media Player. It can
then be restarted. But the same thing happens when I click on a WMP
file. And it's only WMP files. What is happening here? How can I
remedy it without reinstalling Windows. I have reinstalled Windows
Media Player with no change in this behavior.

Your problem reminds me of an old issue with installing QuickTime. I thought
they had fixed that.

Hi Carl,

This might be a Codec related problem. Perhaps the event log will give a clue.

Click Start, Run and type eventvwr.msc
Select Application entry in the left pane
In the right-pane, look for the Error entry denoted by a Red X

Sort by date and track-down the entry based on what time the error exactly occurred. Locate and double-click the entry and you'll see more information in the resulting dialog. Click the copy button at the top and copy the whole event and paste it to a Notepad document and save it. Post the information here.
