If it's a crash, you could usually hunt those down pretty effectively using
the Windows Debugging SDK or other power tool. A brief inspection of the
Problem Reports and Solutions Center control panel's logs can often be
illuminative too - 3rd party modules identified as the Faulting Module there
are usually a really obvious smoking gun. =)

Ben, in that case I'm afraid to stick with my original suggestion.
Hunting down intermittent errors that can't be nailed down to a specific
cause is almost impossible. So I still suggest to just re-install Vista.
It's just one or two hours of work and you're clean. Anything else will take
longer and, thus, will become a waste of your time.
I'm sorry to not be able to give you any other clue.
