I received a call from a new customer the other day and
they are getting an error message at boot up about an
unmountable volume. I did some research on the Microsoft
support site and found out that I need to run a few
commands while it the recovery console.

The problem with this customer is that he had work done
on the computer at a local repair shop and they installed
Windows Pro on the computer and did not give him a CD.
They will not give him a CD unless he pays an additional
$250.

He is willing to purchase a new copy of Windows XP froma
retial store. Can he use a Windows XP Home Upgrade CD or
a Windows XP Pro Upgrade CD to get into the recovery
console? We are not sure if the local repair shop used
an upgrade CD, RC CD or a full version.

If the computer repair shop installed Windows XP and did not
give the customer the installation CD, the customer should report
this to Microsoft. You'll need a "Full Version" of XP Pro in order
to make the repair.
