Windows doesn't recognize any discs in my DVD+/-RW Drive

Several weeks ago, the DVD+/-RW drive on my brand new computer suddenly
stopped reading any discs, either DVD or CD, data or movies or music. After
going back and forth with Dell Support, uninstalling and reinstalling several
programs, editing the Registry, running various Windows utilities there was
no luck in getting the drive to read anything. Eventually they came out and
replaced the drive, but still no luck. All the "hardware" utilities seem to
indicate the drive is functioning, Windows just never sees any disc in the
drive. Now they're saying my only option is to reinstall Windows. This
seems a bit extreme, and I was wondering if anyone else had a similar problem
that was fixed in this way, or if I'm being needlessly worried about
reinstalling my operating system?

What 3rd Party CD or DVD applications have you installed.

Try removing one at a time and reboot.

This may just find your problem.

I've got Sonic MyDVD, and Recordnow, Cyberlink PowerDVD, and
iTunes...unfortunately I've already tried removing them and reinstalling
them--neither way has worked. Any other ideas?

anyone try a new cable? if it came with a 40 conducter cable try it with a
new 40 cond. cable first, then an 80. they are supposed to be cross
compatible, but the switch has fixed two clients rigs for me. i always try a
cable first, with the existing drive, then new cable and a known to function
spare drive. i wouldn't resort to a complete reinstall until all the repair
install options are exhausted.
