After getting nowhere with attempts to get help on a networking problem, I
was left to my own devices to make things much worse.
I put the XP CD in the PC and tried to add additional componnents. I
unchecked things that were already installed and checked a couple of network
items. After that procedure I tried again to establish network settings but
it said a network bridge cable was unplugged. Unless it is internal, the
only cable was the one already going to the router and this was not changed
nor unplugged. Now I found I no longer had any Internet as well as no local
network. Then I thought maybe if I tried something else on the XP CD it
might find any errors and fix. I chose the 3rd opition, not the install nor
recovery. I stopped short when it looked like it was going to set up windows
and as I feared I might lose things being overwritten. So it said windows
was not completely set up and on rebooting I only get a windows logo.
I don't know what to do now. I was ready to pay MS for support as I have
gotten nowhere in weeks of trying to solve a one-way simple file sharing
problem. If I have to reinstall windows, I think I will lose the drivers for
a $900+ Q10 pro audio card as the company, Aardvark went out of business.

When you "unticked" the already installed components, it has disabled
something somewhere (unticking uninstalls that component ;)
