Windows Update just posted up an Automatic update for
Windows Defender definitions. Nice feature, smooth & easy.

I also noticed the Windows Defender definitions available via Microsoft
Update, its a great feature, well done Microsoft.

It's kick ass. Now we just need anti-virus like this.

It is more important to have qulity detection than definition distribution via Windows
Update. Currently Microsoft's so-called anti virus solution falls way below industry
standards.

Stick with quality AV vendors such as Kaspersky and NOD32 and *forget about* Microsoft for
anti virus.

Who ever said anything about Microsoft Anti-virus.

Personally I'm fed up of bloat anti-virus which has loads of useless stuff
running all the time. Windows Defender as a system service rocks, no tray
icon - nothing. Even the installer works properly, unlike a lot of big
anti-virus packages which require system reboots and don't remove previous
versions of themselves.

Sorry -- What you posted "Now we just need anti-virus like this." came across that way. I
guess "this" was interpreted as Microsoft AV offering. My mistake.

Very well stated, Paul. It's pretty obvious that Defender should be a
wake up call to companies like McAfee and Symantec to start coding
a newer/sleeker/more-efficient product line. Every time Symantec's
CEO says they aren't afraid of Microsoft, the exact opposite is true.
Windows Defender uses around ~18.0 Megabytes. Compare that
value to NIS-2004+ that stands in excess of 38 Megabytes and has
enough Registry entries to be it's own Operating System.

Hi,

Does anyone know the difference between Windows Defender and MS AntiSpyware?

Seems both are doing the same thing and will one replace another?

Thanks.

Thanks for the heads up.

I have two issues.

#1 It says it's for XP Home.

#2 It says you have to have SP 2 installed.

From what I've read of SP 2, there are enough conflicts

("if you have _____, ____, or _____, delete them before
installing..."

I have too many of the _____ delete these...

To mess with SP 2.

Thanks anyway!

And I think I am protected up the ying yang. I have found
AVAST 4 to be EXCELLENT.

Good luck!

It's for Windows 2000, XP, MCE & Windows Server.
Avast is an AV, Defender is a Real-Time Malware tool.

Whether you install it or not is your decision, but your
reasoning for avoiding it is flawed.

I've had my fill today of the personal BS that this forum is
morphing into.

This is a technical NG, not a Blog - for that I'd suggest you

In your opinion.

As I said, the page said it was for Home edition. IF it's
for Pro as well, wonderful.

I read enough of the specs to see that it also required that
SP 2 be installed.

No thanks. I've had a number of people tell me that SP 2
isn't for everyone. I have issues that make SP 2 not a fit.

And said so.

I'm sure that there are those in here who welcome my
insights. Several have actually said so, and said so within
the past 24 hours.

I suggest you take your misplaced rage on down the hall and
find some dog to kick.

Me? I'm not interested. You kick me. I kick you.
Deal?

As for "personal bs", I shared mine; now you've shared
yours.

Both your view and mine and everyone else's should be
welcomed.

Why don't you bend over and show me where to plant my size
13?

And there are a number of people in here who are less
qualified than I am, and nicer than you are.

If you want to be in total control, I suggest you create a
blog or a newsgroup titled RMcCarty'sControlFreaksGroup,
Moderated by RMcCarty, the Control Freak.
(that's you)

By the way, little man (not your stature; your mind) life is
tough enough without you adding to the total jerk
population.

Good luck!

The only jerk I see lately in these newsgroups is the bi-polar one directly
in front of your monitor.
Do you really think making an apology for your future transgressions is
proper? Do you think anyone will see your apology tomorrow, next week, a
month from now to know you are bi-polar jerk?
Ken Blake has been nothing but a gentleman with his dealings with you. You
cannot deal with any criticism at all and blast anyone that corrects you as
being exactly what you are and that is a JERK. You are same a playground
bully, bent on disrupting the function and purpose of these peer support
newsgroups for your own pleasure and warped mental illness. Take your meds
and stop inflicting your personal demons on a group of people looking for
actual help. No one wants to get someone's whacked out bi-polar ramblings
about how they should fix their problem.
Please try to access the non-jerk side of your bi-polar mentality and leave
us that care about the quality of information given in these newsgroups to
do what we love to do.
We do not enjoy telling jerks to get lost, no matter how right they think
they are.

Hello Michael
May I bring things down to earth and ask you if I should have expected a
notification from MS re this beta2 offering.
I still have beta1 running with 100+ days to go.
On Tuesday I did an update search for beta 1 and it told me all was updated
etc.
But I know there were recent probs with trying to get a security update
downloaded and in addition to which, that update and 3 or 4 others had not
been a part of any auto-notification, which I have enabled.
So, if I want this latest beta, should I uninstall beta 1 first and then
download beta 2 or will it override beta 1 when I download and install 2.
Rgds
Antioch
P.S. wish all this bad feeling business in the groups recently, would
cease.
Too much to ask I suppose!

Complete and utter rubbish.

The MS defender is very good and installs easilly. No problem on my 300
systems just done.

The only jerk I see lately in these newsgroups is the bi-polar one directly
in front of your monitor.

If you believe that, I do feel sorry for you. We can't all
be as perfect as you and Ken seem to think you are.
Do you really think making an apology for your future transgressions is
proper?
Absolutely. And at least my illness is diagnosed and being
treated. What is your diagnosis ? A false feeling of
superiority?
If this group is reserved for "professionals" with "AS"
after their names, the group name should state that. It
doesn't.
I therefore suggest that you and Ken get over yourselves.
And SEVERAL made comments to me that there were SEVERAL of
you in here who are out of control. My subsequent
less-than-nice remarks to Ken you may apply to yourself.

I suffer mood swings; you suffer a God complex.

Do you think anyone will see your apology tomorrow, next
week, a
month from now to know you are bi-polar jerk?
It doesn't matter. As MANY have stated (that doesn't include
you), we all give our best advice, we all hover (if we're
smart), and see what advice OTHERS give.
Just because my advice (the best I have, and I say so) isn't
certified by Microsoft does not mean I do not contribute.

And if you think your UNADMITTED rudeness will chase me
away, pal; dream on!

As I told Ken, I eat bullies like you for breakfast! My
policy for many years has been-- continues to be-- my best
monitor of how I'm behaving is how I'm being treated.

And the other jerk you didn't notice in here is YOU, sir.
Ken Blake has been nothing but a gentleman with his dealings with you.
In YOUR flawed perception.

Several others hinted (you are too block-headed to have
caught it), that they have as many problems with "you
perfect people" as I do.

God didn't create everyone as a cookie-cutter copy of you
and Ken the barbie doll.
And I am not the only one who objects to his smugness or to
yours. If you can't stand some banter, and some helpful
advice that doesn't really help, then you should perhaps
create a NON-public forum.
And get to a surgeon and have that stick removed from your
butt. You're WAY too uptight.

You
cannot deal with any criticism at all

Lie! Any number of people have told me, "Tal, that won't
work. Try this."
They were NICE about it!
Ken-- and likely you-- come along, and say, "That's just
about the STUPIDEST THING I EVER READ!"

If you don't see the difference, you are part of the
problem.

I wouldn't take that from a boss or a wife. Why would I take
it from you or Ken?

Hint: I won't!

and blast anyone that corrects you as
being exactly what you are and that is a JERK.

When you see a Jerk, lower the mirror! that will usually
fix the problem.

You are same a playground

I would hardly expect one of the playground bullies to admit
being one of the playground bullies. I have heard SEVERAL
kids who the neighborhood kids called "the playground bully'
say, "I'm not a bully. Knocking all the little kids down and
stealing their money and their shoes is just having a little
fun!"

Fun for whom?

Where did I hear this? Court TV. You should watch it
sometime. You're just a "grownup" (chronologically) bully.

bent on disrupting the function and purpose of these peer
support

How sad that you don't believe anyone without a Masters in
Computer Science can contribute!

I've explained to someone who didn't know, how to partition
and format a hard drive. No one else BOTHERED (that includes
you, by the way)
newsgroups for your own pleasure and warped mental illness.

Actually, I'm here to get help and give help. And I'd
recommend you have YOUR false sense of superiority checked
out.

Take your meds

I do.

Take yours! And stop projecting! (And don't feel so
threatened! I TRULY can't bite you from inside your
computer!)

I wondered how long it would take before some with low
enough character to play on my issues would start throwing
low blows.

Now there are two of you.
and stop inflicting your personal demons on a group of people looking for
actual help. No one wants to get someone's whacked out bi-polar ramblings
about how they should fix their problem.

There truly is a remedy for your problem. Actually, there
are two.
1. don't read my posts.
2. don't presume to speak for everyone. It shows that you
don't have the stones to stand alone.
"No one wants to get someone's whacked out ..."
You don't speak for everyone! You speak for you!
3. Do try to get to a reputable clinic and have your
superiority complex diagnosed and treated. (Also known as a
God Complex)

Please try to access the non-jerk side of your bi-polar mentality and leave
us that care about the quality of information given in these newsgroups to
do what we love to do.

"Same to you!" to quote Bob Newhart.

As Paul Harvey put it:

"Oh, I'd LOVE to buy you for what you're worth, and then
sell you for what you THINK you're worth; then I could
retire a wealthy man!"

We do not enjoy telling jerks to get lost, no matter how right they think
they are.

You seem to have TOTALLY enjoyed dumping on someone you feel
superior to .

Feel better ?

If you do, I'm glad!

:-)

At least, if you dump on ME occasionally, you won't be
tempted to kick your dog or beat your wife and kids!

(see? I do have you figured out)

Final thought: What most people hate about some of us is
that we have the stones to say to your face what everyone
else is THINKING, but doesn't have the nerve to tell you.

;-)

Anyway, I hope now that you've vented at that "Jerk on your
computer screen", you feel all better!

You have a GREAT day, ok?

I feel all better now that I've found yet someone ELSE I can
feel superior to!

:-)

Good luck!

lol!!

Whoa! You think a lot of yourself!

If you treat someone who says he's mentally ill this way, I
shudder to think what you do to people with white canes when
no one's looking!

Do you verbally abuse those with Downe's Syndrome, too?

I bet you steal the money from the blind beggar's cup when
no one's looking!

A MAN of REAL character and stainless steel gonads, you are!

NOT.

( I ASSURE you; one of us is REALLY impressed with you.
HINT: It's not me)

Get over yourself.

I suppose this means that I can count on both you and Ken to
refuse to give me any of your gold plated, Sterling silver
advice in the future?

Or at least it'll be accompanied by several boot kicks to
the groin.

Good luck!
