I have 2 hard disks. When I finished using Partition Magic to merge the
partitions in the second disk and reboot, the Windows XP Home in my first
disk did not respond and just stopped with a empty screen.

I checked the disk and found that I am unable to access to the files there
anymore. I found that the disk size was reduced by the size of my original
data size. I used Recovery Console to copy ntldr as recommened by some of
the other experts but with no avail. I then tried recovery software such as
EasyRecovery, R-studio, File Scavenger, etc. all failed reading anything more
than the reported size, i.e. less the original data size.

Can anyone suggest a method such that I can retrieve the important data in
the disk? My original intention is to properly adjust the partitions of the
second disk that I will start to back-up the files in the 1st file. Now I
ended up with total failure.

Your urgent assistance is much appreciated.

What I am going to say is no help at all in recovering your lost files.. you
have probably done too much to make file recovery possible already.. file
recovery has to be actioned in a structured and panic-free way..

Before using any utility that is going to make a major change, you BACKUP
(SAVE) important stuff.. Partition Magic claims not to affect or lose data..
for some, this will be true.. but if anything goes awry, no matter how small
an event, data will be lost..

File recovery programs are good, but they do not always work.. it depends
very much on how corrupt the file structure has become.. they have
limitations.. even Easy Recovery Pro at $500 can't guarantee success..

If the data is that important, you may want to employ the services of a
specialist company.. they are expensive, way more than the cost of a few CDs
and a CD burner plus software.. look for ads in a computer mag for companies
that do this.. to start you off, Ontrack, suppliers of Easy Recovery Pro,
offer services..

Good luck with your new policy of backing up before messing..
