windows coming up sideways

When first booting my computer, the orientation of the screen is correct.
The windows logo comes up just fine but when it comes to the XP login
window, from that point on, the screen is sideways. All text and mouse
movement are coordinated as if I should rotate the monitor 90 degrees. This
is a Windows Home Edition machine. Any ideas on if this is a windows
setting?

TIA,

Shawn

Shawn,

Check under Display Properties. Some video drivers let you rotate the
display to accommodate wide documents etc.

I have had a similar problem, except the screen was split after the video
driver kicks in....the bottom fifth of the desktop is at the top of the
window. The problem is almost certainly with the video driver, IMHO, and not
with Windows. Reinstall your video driver or an updated one from the video
card manufacturer's site. If that doesn't change anything, poke around in
the settings for the video driver. Mine, for example, has a provision for
using a display in portrait rather than landscape orientation; check and see
if you've checked the wrong box, if your driver does have that capability.
Start in control panel; if there's nothing there, check to see if you have a
separate control program for the video system that is in program files or
perhaps on the bottom right part of the taskbar. Unless you've really
tinkered with your video driver settings to get them just the way you want,
see if there's a box that returns everything to the factory defaults.
