windows boots to black screen

This morning I started my computer, and something really weird happened. A blue screen appeared with the Windows XP logo at the top and began automatically running some sort of program, that looked like "CHKDSK." I was not given an option to close the program. It reported to me that it was deleting bunches of files, and it did so in three different phases. Most of the files deleted were "index" files followed by numbers. For example, it would say "deleting index file 179" or some such. As I said, it deleted a BUNCH of files

Immediately after it tried to start windows, but instead of my usual login screen, all I got was an all black screen with pointer (which my mouse can still move around the screen). I tried shutting down and restarting in a variety of different windows modes ("last successful" "safe" and "normal" modes), all of which boot to this blank black screen. What can I do to restore my computer?

i don't know if this will help but it sounds like you may
have gotten a virus, have you tried to virus scan? it
seems to me either way you need to get the reboot disk
out and reboot the system as files have been deleted
which may be needed to operate windows itself or have you
ever had the warning of resources to low to do this
operation before this happened? if so then you have run
your resource out and will probably need to get more ram
and a better processer.

yeah, it does sound virus-like, doesn't it? But I have no good explanation. I can't currently run a virus check because I can't get the computer to boot... however, I just updated my virus software (Symantic, I think, corporate ed.) before Christmas. I haven't been to any new strange-and-exotic websites from which I might be contracting nasty things, and all my email is stringently screened by the university for which I work... it's a mystery to me.
I suppose that I can't re-install w/o losing all my files..

Be sure RAM is OK by running Memtest86. If OK you could have harddrive
problems. To fix computer, boot off WinXP CD and select repair.
