windows appearance

i have lost the windows xp style taskbar, windowsetc. i can select the
option in control panel-systen-advanced-performance, but nothing happens.
anyone got any ideas on how to rectify this?TIA

Is the Themes service started? (Click Start/Run and type Services.msc)

Right-click Desktop, choose Properties
In the Appearance tab, choose "Windows XP Style"
