Received a pop-up on my scren entitled "Security Bulletin
MS03-043", stating a "buffer overrun in messenger
services" and stating that Windows XP is affected. The
message tells me to download a patch
from "www.windowspatch.net". Is this legitimate? Do I
need to do this?

Norma:
No! Do you have your fire wall activated. The only Windows patches are
through Windows update. Microsoft's domain always ends with "Microsoft.com".
Everyone to their own, but I went to add remove windows components and
removed "Windows Messenger". Doing that is your decision.

Thanks for a quick response. I do have a firewall
activated. Glad I asked, though -- new computer and very
expensive. I will do the remove Windows Messenger as you
suggest. Thanks again.

Removing messenger is a bit drastic. It has it's uses an
advantages. I have and use it but it's configured to only
start when I want it to and I never get any pop-ups at
all. I use SpywareBlaster and NoAdHosts. Have fun.

Windows messenger and msn messenger are two different
services "messenger service" is defaulted to automatic
and nobody who uses their computer at home needs it on,
this service is also they way that the blaster worm gets
on your computer shut it OFF.

What? You mean Messenger is not a worthless MS marketing gimmick?
:)

Actually, removing Windows Messenger via add/remove simply hides it... which
is fine.
