When I finally got MacAffee to run it found around 5
worms or viruses that had infected this Windows XP
machine. Now they are apparently all out...but there is
some lasting effects. Here's what I notice:

When I go to WindowsUpdate or some site that has a
security certificate, it doesn't work. It says "Cannot
load ActiveX controls. Change security settings." Nothing
I do changing security settings helps.

Also, when I try and install a WindowsXP security patch,
I get "Cannot verify the integrity of UPDATE.INF. please
load Crytographic services." Even starting it in Safe
mode, I get this message.

I've tried renaming \Windows\System32\Catroot2 to a
different name so a new one would be created. But I still
get the same problem.

Short of reinstalling the whole operating system, are
there any patches or fixes or tweaks behind the scenes I
can try to get rid of these problems and get XP to work
normally?

thanks,
Bill

It looks like I solved the problem..i found a knowledge
base article about re-registering some of the DLL's that
had to do with digital security and it seems to work now.
