yeah well i about threw my computer out the window when it says i need to
activate windows because my key is in use already or windows will stop
working in 2 days. i had to reformat my PC due to other vista problems. i
activated it before i reformatted right away when i first started using
vista. now it thinks they i am running vista on 2 computers. they dont give a
option that says "i reformatted and this is the same user/computer as it was
before and i dont want to deal with a bunch of question posting" so yeah what
should i do about this? i need help fast or my computer will be thrown out
the window

HI Jim--

I'll bet the other Vista problems might have been fixedwithout
formatting--did you try Startup Repair from the DVD which is not just for no
boot Vista problems?

What you should do about the activation problem is to call MSFT--the number
is provided on the activation wizard, so follow instructions for telephoning
them, and they'll straighten things out. The appropriate number for your
location will be displayed.

To quote Mr. Frish:

"You can get started with phone activation by typing "slui.exe 4"
(w/o the quotes) in the Start Search box in the Start Menu and pressing
Enter.
The phone activation process takes about 6 minutes."

Happened to me also. I ended up having to call in and get this
ridiciously long new activation code from someone who was fluent in
Hindi, but not English: "Oit, fv, tin, tee, nai..(those are
numbers!)....... I can tell you I wanted to throw a lot out of the
window that day, including my computer, Microsoft, my wife, four kids,
the dog with puppies, outsourcing as way to cut cost and finally
myself. But I am still here, so it is possible to get though it.. :)

Follow the instructions, phone Microsoft, 10 minutes later you'll be up
and running.

I guess Americans are pretty self absorbed since all the media anchors talk
about fuel economy and jump into their C02 spewing SUVs, and their apathy
now has their butts wiretapped to the gills, hemorrhaging money in Iraq and
losing tons of soldiers lives, but I couldn't quite understand the insane UK
prejudice against "Gingers" aka Ginges aka people with red hair on Nightline
tonight.

You don't see much of Dennis the Miller except on Fox Noise after he started
his neocon rants despite the fact that his far flung analogies were
entertaining when he was on Monday Night football.

LOL congrats to Rudy Guilliani who was moronic enough to hire Mr. World War
IV Norman Podhoretz as his foreign policy "advisor." With the draft that
would have to result after Podhoretz/Guilliani invaded Iran they'd end up
taking dauhgter Caroline out of the Harvard Yard and son Andrew off that
golf course hauling their asses into a tank.

LOL. It's not really a serious prejudice amongst any sensible people here.

I am a European living in America. This kind of stuff is frustrating,
especially in a tech newsgroup. It causes bad feelings among peole who
should be friends. I know self absorbed Americans, Brits and
Mongolians for that matter, but I do not talk about it here (until
now). Take it to alt.soc.self.absorbed or something like that.

Not even 10 minutes, more like 2...you read him a code , he reads you a code
back. Try Yoga or something with less caffeine

It's a signature -- Automatically rotated, by tradition to be taken

2 minutes is an under-estimate, IIRC the averages are in the 4 range for
an "ideal call" (no repeats, no arguments, customer answers the
questions correctly)

10 minutes is traditional "under-promise, over-deliver" philosophy.

So, please explain how this bloody inconvenience to an honest user stops
some Chinese pirate? If you can't explain how it does that then what's
the point?

It doesn't. However, it does stop my dad from installing one copy of
the OS on his desktop, laptop, my mom's desktop, my grandmother's PC,
and whoever else he wants.

Microsoft would create a PR nightmare if they tried to stomp on my dad,
but if they simply make it a pain in the ass, he'll just buy licenses
(or leave the other computers on older OSes, which encourages people to
buy new hardware as it comes with new OSes, as needed for their other
software)

well yeah i know that a windows rep would tell me is the way to do it 100% of
the time. i just tried this and i was putting in those numbers and the voice
kept telling me they were wrong. then i sat on hold for 45 minutes. i dont
have the time to deal with all of this. i would just like the OS i payed 200$
for to work when i want it to without having to waist hours of my time

So why have I had to activate 3 machines 3 times each now when nothing
had changed? (XP, W2003 and Vista).

Explain how this is good PR when I can download Linux free, install it
on any machine I like, it does what it needs to do and it doesn't
threaten me with being "Disconnected" every few weeks for no apparent
reason.

As to the bullshit "New hardware as needed" argument you put forward I
believe it is MY decision whether I need new hardware or not, not yours,
Microsoft's or anybody else's. Sure I accept that Vista would need new
hardware, it won't work properly on older stuff, no problem, it happens
with other software too, but that fact alone will make me buy new
hardware not being threatened by some bloody spyware / trojan disconnect
bot.

You are deliberately ignoring the fact that if the supposed events you
describe take place MS still only sell one copy, it doesn't matter
whether your dad installs it on 6 computers or leaves 5 of them running
W98. The only way I can see this affects MS is that since 98 is no
longer getting updates there would be an extra load on their servers
which isn't being paid for. However I'd argue they could rectify that by
including less bugs...

The reality is that if your dad is going to install it on all those
machines which are not for professional use then he'll just as likely
become annoyed with activations as I have and install Linux as I have,
and kick Microsoft out the door.

If you buy several Ford cars and they all keep giving you (You words) a
pain in the ass you will eventually stop buying Ford, especially when
Toyotas (Or whatever) are cheaper. Both you (In your statement above)
and Microsoft seem to be assuming there's only one game in town, an
unwise assumption for any business.

Whether it does or doesn't stop Chinese pirates (unrelated to the Pittsburgh
Pirates) is inconsequential. It is the method Microsoft has employed. If you
find it a waste of valuable, preciousssss time (unlike these post ;) ),
don't use it.
Microsoft surely will not change to the whims of every user.
And in the Big Scheme of Life...is it really that bad?
