having a problem with windows 2000 professional and need to restore back to
"last know good" or equivalent to function that is available in 2000. do you
have any suggestion.

You tap F8 a number of times as the system is booting up. You will then get a screen giving you the options you want such as Last Known Good Configuration and Safe Mode.

Use ERUNT:

To cover major disasters (including h.d. failure) I create a bootable
cloned backup drive using XXCLONE:

http://www.xxclone.com/

For convenience, the backup drive goes in a removeable tray which
is connected to a secondary drive cable (set as secondary master). To
restore from backup, set BIOS to boot first from HDD1 instead of
floppy or HDD0. Then use XXCLONE to copy from drive C: (backup HDD1)
to E: (HDD0).

There is no system restore function with Windows 2000. Choosing 'last known
good' boots the system with the control set that last successfully booted
your system. Control sets contain system configuration information such as
device drivers and services.
