I found my operating system non responsive with no errors
or visible issues, powered down and powered back up and
now I can't get past the boot up screen with the blue
progress bar- it freezes about 3\4 of the way through the
progress bar. I ran a drive fitness test (DOS version of
PC Dr.) from IBM on my IBM laptop and it passed both the
quick and thorough tests; however I am still hanging up
in the same spot. I have even tried bringing it up in
Safe Mode, last known good config etc. IBM suspects
there may be a corrupt file and that I may have to
reinstall Windows 2000.
Do I have any other options to trouble shoot this issue?

Thank you very much for any information anyone can
provide!! Happy New Year!!

You could try an in-place upgrade, which will maintain your
existing registry and application installs. Boot off the Win2K
CD and select the option to Repair once you get to that
screen (it takes a while before you get to it). Read through
the following two articles before proceeding:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=292175

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306952

If the in-place upgrade is successful, and you can boot all the
way into Win2K, reapply whatever Service Pack, patches,
hotfixes etc. you had before the problem started.

FYI. I'm having simular problems with lock ups and re-
installing Win 2000 didn't fix the problem for me.
