I have recently been running Win 98 SE on a P3 1g. I tried to upgrade to Win 2000 Pro and all went fine. It then said the system must be restarted (like all new programs) and when it did it went to the flash screen with the little blue progress bar. It then freezes when it hit the fourth little bar and doesn't go any further. It will not run any safe mode or in any mode for that matter. I have tried partitioning, reformatting, re-installing and booting from CD. Non of which works, it simply gets to the same point and stops.......Whats going on??

I recommend a clean installation of Win2000. This involves formatting the
disk during the installation process - do you have backups of your data
files?

I have tried reformatting during setup, but still got the same result. Thats currently where the pc sits at the moment, for about an hour now on 4 little progress bars. I've also tried the Repair Console and doing the FIXMRD and FIXBOOT. Whether that has any effect at all, it didn't show it upon reboot. I do have backups of data and all necessary components.

You now have to start at ground-floor level: Download and run the diagnostic
tool that your disk manufacturer makes available free of charge on his web
site. This will diagnose your hard disk independently of any operating
system.

Ok, I can only get to dos prompt. How do i find out my disk manufacturer? and by disk is that the hard disk

Yes, I'm talking about the hard disk. You must open your machine, locate
your hard disk, pull it out, then make a note of the manufacturer's name and
the model number. Here are some common manufacturers:
- Seagate
- Maxtor
- Quantum

Jo can also get drive mfr/model# from
Start/Settings/ControlPanel/AdminTools/ComputerMgt/
SysTools/SysInfo/Components/Storage/Drives
which is a real mouthful.
Maker and model appear together (on my system) in the
entry titled Drive Model.
Western Digital, another manufacturer, is abbreviated
there to WDC.

That's a new one on me - thanks for the tip!
Unfortunately it may not help the OP, since
he can't start Wind2000 . . .
