I have a bunch of laptops that I changed from one domain to another. I
created the same user accounts on the new server that they had on the
previous server (for naming convention purposes). All is well when the
laptop is physically plugged into the network. When the laptop is unplugged
from the network this is what happens.
The user attempts to logon using the credentials he would always use.
Windows 2000 accepts the password and begins the logon process. The music
plays and it appears as if the desktop is about to appear but it never does.
The machine just sits there with the background of the desktop showing and
never actually makes it to the desktop. After seeing that I then attempted
to log on using the Administrator account. After makeing no changes to the
machine I then logged off and log on using the users account which would not
log on earlier. That was successful. I've tried removing the users previous
local settings from the machine also making the user an administrator of the
local machine. Neither of these solutions had any effect. I do not want to
format the machine or change the user name as the user has a .pst file which
is about 1.2Gb and exporting and importing that file is a very lengthy
process. I'm just hopeing someone has had this problem and knows a solution.
Thanks in advance.akes it to the desktop. After seeing that I then

- Examine your logon script
- Examine your DNS settings
- Ask yourself how long you can afford not to back up the user's .PST file.
This is a disaster waiting to happen!

I did not think of checking the DNS settings. The logon script is a .kix
script that works fine when the user is on the network. I will try running
the logon scripts locally and examine my DNS settings. The .PST files are
backed up regularly. They are just a pain to import

Thanks for the tip
