Windows 2000 Installation Problem

I've got a new laptop to which I need to install Windows 2000. The machine
is and ultralight and uses an external USB CD-ROM with legacy USB support
built into the BIOS.

Whenever I try to do an install I get an "inaccessible disk" error on a blue
screen and have been unable to continue.

I have reformatted the HD in the machine on another laptop and I am going to
attempt the installation again. If this fails I will try starting from boot
disks. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there any way for me to copy
the install files to the local disk to install from there?

So none of that worked - I've found in a few KB articles that my USB CD-ROM
drive is probably not supported by the Windows Installer but would be
supported after installing SP4.

Anyone have any idea how to do an install without a CDROM drive or a
installation server? I can't seem to find anything that tells me how in the
KB.

Use your other machine to format FAT32, and copy the i386-folder to your
hard disk. Then use a Win9x floppy with SMARTDRV to boot and start the
install (winnt.exe).

This MS Knowledge Base article, written for XP (but it is the same
procedure for Win2000) might help:

Thank you for setting me straight Bjorn - I had tried that already but with
an NTFS volume - wasn't thinking properly.

Thanks Again

Hi!

Sorry, I did write a "Reply" to you to this thread with a "describing"
title, because opening a "New" thread didn't work for me for some strange
reason since some hour ...

Please, give me some hint/help on this problem of mine with the upgrade
installing of Win2000Pro UK with a SP2 CD. I have been reading some posts
found with Google regarding just this problem for Win2000Server version, but
there wasn't anything to do/correct or any help with these.

During the installation procedure after some 20 minutes, I suddenly got an
copy error message on file AppSer~1.cl_ and just after that, one after one,
also on some 20-30 more similar named files. The only way to get rid of
these error messages after several retries was to cancel them.

But, this probably caused a miss of installing several Win2000
services/sub-services, as an example, there is no export/import functions on
regedit.exe, and My Computer and Control Panel seems missing some functions
etc.

So, what to do to get these *.cl_ etc. totally some 30 files to be copied
pertinently during the install?? I already tried to copy them to a floppy,
and tried to rename them just the same as they was, but it didn't have any
affect ... I also did all the re-install procedure through once more with
just the same results ... And now I have already updated to SP4 and also all
the some 50 more updates, and wouldn't like to begin once again from the SP2,
even maybe already being there after the sfc /scannow check ...

Thanks in advance for a prompt reply, to this desperate status of mine ...

Hi!

I have now been opening a new thread (with another machine, which "allowed"
me to do it ...) for this case of mine with the title "Win2000Pro
Installation Problem" with a corrective procedure. It can be found easily
e.g. with the keyword "AppSer".

Best regards,
