I am using Windows 2000 Professional since late 99. Today this message keeps coming up. Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt. \WNNT2\SYTEM32\CONFIG\SYTEMed. I've tried to repair it with the windows 2000 Professional CD, without succes, I've installed the starter disk, without success, I used the emergency disk without success. I've reinstalled windows 2000 Professional but the system does not recognize the origanl installed programs. the question that I have is . How can I find this corrupt system file, when I search for the file it shows that it does not exist? How and were on the system would I have to reinstall this "missing/corrupt" file to make the original setup operate again? If somone has a solution that would be great. Thanks for your help in advance. Harald.

If the system hive is corrupt, and assuming you already tried LKG, It may be
possible to rename the system hive found in
%windir%\system32\config\system
to system.old
then rename
%windir%\system32\config\system.alt
to
%windir%\system32\config\system

You can also try using the most recent backup found in
%windir%\repair\regback

If that fails you haven't much choice but to copy/ use the
original-as-installed system hive from
%windir%\repair\system
to
%windir%\system32\config\system
You'll need to reinstall the device drivers for any hardware added since the
original OS install.

To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows 2000
Setup CD or the Windows 2000 Setup floppy disks. If you do not have Setup
floppy disks and your computer cannot start from the Windows 2000 Setup CD,
use another Windows 2000-based computer to create the Setup floppy disks.
Press ENTER at the "Setup Notification" screen. Press R to repair a Windows
2000 installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The
Recovery Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do
not have the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery
Console quits and restarts the computer. Once the password has been
validated, you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access
to the hard disk. You can only access the following folders on your
computer: %systemroot% and %windir%

Since you have a parallel install you can do the file copy from the other
install.

I have 2 questions about the processes you describe - please see below:

1. I thought this was done automatically when the system could not
load the system.dat file it renamed system.alt -> system.dat and
tried to load that. Why go about this renaming process ?

You can also try using the most recent backup found in

2. I take it that the process below is delineating HOW you go
about performing the above " copy/ use the original-as-installed
system hive " ?
Yes ?

thanks, robert

1. Windows 2000 doesn't use system.dat, no nothing is automatic about this
process.
2. Just describes the steps to start the recovery console which is the first
step in the repair process.

I just retried the install with the disc and it goes into DOS It shows, the following file is missing. C:|windows\command.com
A> and it asks me about the "command interpreter" ??
Any suggestion? I am at a loss. Thanks for your help. Harald.

How are you trying? Are you trying to clean install? To do a clean install,
either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup disks. The set of four
install disks can be created from your Windows 2000 CD-Rom; change to the
\bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos) or
makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.
