to reply to a problem about a DISK BOOT FAILURE
You can probably fix the problem without an ERD:
- Boot the machine from your Win2000 CD.
- Select Repair when prompted, then Command Console.
- Enter these commands:
fixmbr
fixboot
You should now be able to boot normally.
I take it that you have good backups of your important
data files. If not then this would be an excellent time
to >think about your backup strategy, and if it is a good
idea >to keep your irreplaceable files all on the one
vulnerable >medium.

My problem is the opposite in that on booting up, the cpu
goes through the normal process and when the desktop is
fully drawn, dialogue boxes come saying certain strange
programs cannot open due to the cpu is in the process of
shutting down, whereon it does shut down and continuously
reboots & shuts down, etc.

I can get into safe mode without the shut down, and a
search does not reveal any of those strange programs
listed in the dialog boxes.

Would a similar approach which *Pegasus \(MVP\)"
<[email protected]* gave for the DISK BOOT FAILURE problem,
help me with my ALWAYS SHUTTING DOWN problem?

And in the *Windows 2000 Troubleshooters* help page, which
troubleshooter would be the way for me to proceed?

Many thanks for any help you can offer.

No it wouldn't help.

You need to boot into safe mode and:
Run a good antivirus program
Run a good trojan scanner
Run several scumware removers
Get Mike Lin's "StartupCPL" and disable everything that runs at startup that
isn't critical to system operation.

Dance naked around a campfire at midnight on the Autumnal Equinox
Sacrifice a chicken
