Hello,
I am in a pickle and I'm not a super-techie. I am trying
to replace a CD-ROM drive in an old HP Pavilion
(circa '98). The computer will not recognize any other CD-
ROM drive other than the Goldstar that came with it (which
is pretty much busted). HP support has been trying to
help me. They said that I needed to update the BIOS. To
do this I needed to create a boot disk. I created the 4-
disk set as described by Microsoft but then the six
critical BIOS files I downloaded from HP's web site
wouldn't fit on Disk One (duh, it was full!). So I
followed HP's advice to create a boot disk with just 3
files on in: Boot.ini, ntldr, and ntdetect.com. No
sweat - I did that and extracted the 6 BIOS update files
on to the same floppy. Then I cold-started the machine
with the floppy in the drive. I got a "Non-System disk or
disk error. Replace and press any key when ready"
message. NOW WHAT? any ideas? HP Support is stumped.
Thanks,
Steve
