I know I should have researched this ten years ago. It was one of those
annoying little things you never make time for. Why do all my windows
suddenly start opening in a non-maximized state like a pop-up for awhile, and
then just as mysteriously go back to opening maximized after a couple of
days? Where is the default setting that controls how windows open on your
computer? Also, I'll resize a couple of windows to see them concurrently and
then, the remainder of the day, all my windows open in the same manner. I
just can't seem to find this setting in Windows.

Windows remembers the size of the last closed window for that
type/application when the window was resized manually and not with the
maximize option. Err... I hope that makes sense. Basically it remembers the
size of the last time you resized it manually.
