I'm installing XP Home for a friend, he has three children who also use the
computer.
What is the advantage of creating separate accounts, what does it all mean?

Simply it sets up user folders for each so that documents/files can be stored
seperately.

Also a great advantage when the kids all have email, as each use is seperate
so in Outlook/Outlook Express you can set up an account for that user and
when they log on they just open the Outlook programme to check only their on
messages etc.

Same goes for MSN etc, as the settings for each user are unique, unless you
copy profiles etc.

It's much more than creating separate folder structures and email accounts.

It allows you, as an administrator level account, to limit the changes they
can make to the system, and limit what programs can be run.

On XP Home, the fine tuning of this is reduced, but children would often get
Limited accounts so that they can't add or delete programs, or uninstall
hardware. This limits the damage they can do. Limited accounts can not
change other accounts, while Admin accounts can do whatever they want
anywhere.

If your friend uses the system, and has data on it he values, the
children's accounts will *not* be Admin accounts.

Very frequently, people who have children using a system also install
programs like NetNanny, which very effectively limit where they can go - or
be taken - on the Net. And, it allows easy control over the times they can
even use the system.

All of these depend on the other users not knowing the Admin passwords.
Change passwords regularly.
