I had my hard drive fail about 2 months ago. I have a dell and the hardrive
hard a diagnostic partion. the diagnostic returned an harddrive error. This
has just happened again. What happens is that the computer locks and upon
restart my user account is reset to new, no email setup, no documents,
nothing buyt the programs are still there. Again the drive reports errors.
Any Ideas
In both cases I have restored the drive from a nightly backup and had no
problems after.

Yes I replaced the first drive which was a maxtor 80gb sata and I replaced it
with a 160gb Seagate sata drive which just failed and I have replaced it wit
h another just like it and resorted it from the backup.

Thanks
Vincent

the 3rd HDD is acting up, also?
how old is this computer?
could there be something wrong with power supply?

No the 3 drive I just installed and restoed from backup and it is working
fine. The power supply seems to be fine. When I ran the drive diagnostics it
idicated bad sectors but my understaning is that this is not nessasarily a
"micanical" problem and could be a software issue.

2nd or even 3rd hdd has mechanical/bad sectors?

hdd is a mechanical device. bad sectors occur on hdd/mechanical devices.
not on software.
