I'm really not sure what happened so I will do my best to discribe the problem. I did a windows XP update. Once the update was loaded window said to do a manual startup so I did. Now i'm not able to get passed the DOS screen that ask me to select Safe Mode, etc.. I have tryed all the modes listed. I'm able to use the safe modes but that is it. I tryed to perform a restore but that is not working. Please help me, Thanks.

You tried System Restore in Safe Mode?
Did you also attempt to uninstall the update in Add/Remove Programs in
Safe Mode?
Did you try Last Known Good Configuration?

Otherwise perform a Repair Installation:

go into the bios (probably by keep pressing the F10 key) change setting
to boot from the CD. Keep the XP disc in the drive. This may or may not
work I'm not sure. It sounds like there was a major oops during your
upgrade.

I to have experienced the same problem. It was the
DirectX Security Update that did it....I am still
searching for an answer....at least I am not alone.

I run Win XP Pro. and thought I would tell you that today, June 10, I
updated and
installed the latest Security Update for DirectX 9.0 (KB839643) and I have
NOT
encountered any problems!!

I am also having similar problems. I installed the update this morning. My computer was running fine till I rebooted. Now I have problems. If I start up normally, I cannot get past the Windows XP home edition screen with the scrolling green meter. It will just sit for about a minute or so and just go to a black screen. After about 10 minutes or so, XP will do a disk check and there are very many corrupted or unreadable files detected. It will 'fix' these files. The result is that I stay on the Windows XP home edition screen a shorter amount of time before I get the black screen. I have tried starting it in safe mode but it locks up while listing all of the drivers. It never goes to desktop. Same for safe mode with networking. I have tried the option of last known good configuration and it just goes to the Windows XP home edition screen for about a minute then sits at a black screen. I attempted to boot from my CD rom with my Windows XP disk, but that didn't work either. It behaved as if I was starting Windows normally. So, I inserted my Windows 98 startup disk. (not a typo) The hope was to use some of the diagnostic tools to check the computer. I ran scandisk but no errors reported. I went back to boot from CD and XP setup started up!

Now, I can probably put a new install of XP over top the old one and I will at least have a functioning computer. But, what happened? I know 99% of users probably had no problems with this update and this is my first problem with updates. My computer was running great till I installed this update. I certainly dont want to install this update on any other computers! Any useful information will be greatly appreciated.

An update: I reinstalled XP over my corrupted copy. However, it didnt really overlay nice and neat like I had come to expect. It acted as if the original OS was ripped out and this one put in its place. The result was that some software, ex Nortons software, was not integrated with this new copy of XP. It also wiped my E-mail and My Documents folder, but everything else was saved. I dumped all files I wanted saved onto another computer and started from scratch. I reformatted my HD and reinstalled all programs. Its a leaner computer now. Also, I attempted to install this update again, and it caused no problems. Therefore, there was something else on my computer that it did not like and tanked it.
