While waiting to resolve the issue of XP not loading past
the splash screen both in normal and safe mode
(see "Windows XP Pro won't boot up past th..." posting of
7/19/03 at 2:33 PM), I decided to try to install XP to a
harddrive I'm not using.

I installed a 5 GB Fujitsu hard drive that was not being
used. I set it up as the master and re-formatted it to
the NTFS system.

I then turned on the PC with the OEM supplied XP CD ROM
and proceeded to install XP Pro (this is a CD provided by
ASUS. It has a product key and only has windows XP Pro on
it; it's not a restore CD).

The PC proceeded to "collecting information", "Dynamic
Update" & "preparing installation" with no problem.

By the time it got to "Installing windows" the problems
started.

The first attempt got to the point where it estimated
that it would take 23 minutes to finish. The indicator at
lower right continued to blink sequentially and the
features text display kept rotating its messages.

1.5 hours later it STILL said 23 minutes left (with the
indicator still blinking sequentially and different
features messages displaying)!

I restarted the PC and after booting up, it reported it
would continue the install; it re-started at "Installing
windows" point and I had to re-enter all the pc data,
product key, etc. It got to the point where it reported
34 mins left and then again hung up. I re-started 3 more
times, once getting to 13 mins left before hanging up
(these last few times the motion indicator at lower right
and the progress bar completely stopped and the "features
text" no longer displaying new info).

Being 4:30 AM, I decided to re-format the drive and call
it a night.

Today I started the re-install again. It got to 27 mins
left and again hung up. No motion on the indicator,
progress bar not moving, CD Rom not activating (although
I can open and close it)....

I re-started a few more times and then the PC would get
so far (after I input the product key, network settings,
name, etc.) and then it would re-start by itself!

This last time (as I write this), the PC has again hung
up on the "Installing Windows" part with 27 mins left to
go , progress bar frozen at about 1/3 green and the
sequential motion meter at lower right not moving (it's
also been displaying the "Greater Accessibility" text for
20 mins now -- again, it is frozen).

Do I need to "Exorcise" this damn thing or what?

Any suggestions?

Try taking out all but the video card IE: modem NiC Sound if any are on board
disable them in the bios you also may wana try flashing the bios as well.
