I have been receiving a recent notice that my windows XP is not registered
nor authentic. I still have the box and the product number on it from when it
was installed. How do I fix this - I am a computer novice.

I have been having major problems since I downloaded security service pack 2
from Microsoft, windows media player will no longer burn cd's, cannot add or
remove software anymore and yesterday my outlook express decided to give 15
bad image error messages and when I tried to restore my computer to a prior
date (several prior dates I get " could not restore your system") this
morning I am getting the same message as below You maybe a victim of software
conterfiet software Microsoft Windows XP professional. Would you like to
validate your Windows XP professional. I do not have professional on my
computer I have XP home additiion. Cannot boot in safe mode will only bring
up command prompt. So how do we fix this problem I cannot remove the service
pack 2 (unable to remove software)?

I contacted Microsoft and they sent me to a site to verify the WGA (windows
genuine authorization) I ran the test and the software on my computer is
GENUINE MICROSOFT. Yet I still get the same message "This is not genuine
microsoft hardware. What is funny is my computer is 5 years old and I have
been using this software with out a problem for 5 years then Aug 06 the
software becomes conterfeit? Plus it says the conterfeit software is Windows
XP professional edition. On another post I was told this a know problem with
Microsoft and to contact Microsoft.

I have a Apple Macbook that is SO OOOOOOOOOOOOOO sweet to use, no problems no
weekly updates and keynote makes Powerpoint look like elementry shool. I
think it is time to buy a new Apple IMAC Pluse when you need support you can
go to the store and talk to them at the APPLE bar instead of spending 20 min
trying to get a Microsoft tech rep in India to understand what you saying.

catastrophic failures that require the user to reinstall windows are
far too common. if you have to call microsoft, you're likely already
screwed - at least for me - but i'm in IS.

there should be a better way for the masses to "reset" their systems
and maintain their settings and data without reformatting and
reinstalling.

maybe some MS guys around here can comment on the progress they are
making toward that aim?

a possible start toward that goal is the backup utility i use in
windows onecare live. it automates the backup of important files. if
MS could provide easy, no worry backup for users, then it wouldn't be
much of a step to repair the OS and/or lay down the image of what the
user needs.

system restore is good, but it's hard to use for most people, and it
negatively affects system performance. to top it off, it's disabled on
many enterprise networks via group policy.

i have faith MS will make progress on these goals, but i noticed that
fancy 3D interfaces seem to be the priority. i think apple has a great
opportunity here to fill the need.

my grandpa used to have an IBM that litterally had six buttons on the
screen - files, spreadsheet, word processor, help, prodigy only, and
something else. god he loved that thing.

No weekly updates? You got to be kidding. For the last two years the amount
of weekly updates has increased all the time. And I bet if WGA turns out to
be a success, Apple will surely follow.
