window suddenly closes

Hi

I've only been using XP about a week. things ran smoothly for first
few days. I've got a folder full of work, probably about twenty files
in it. If I try to access it, or click a file to open it, the window
suddenly disappears. If I try to access one of the files in the folder
thru the OPEN command, the program crashes. If I try to save a new
file to that folder, the program locks up.

I've tried moving the folder to another location. renaming the folder.
Any action works for a couple of hours then the problem repeats.

Any ideas what might cause this?
 
R.click the file or folder,select "open with" if it exist,otherwise open folder
you can also select properties,see what xp shows for it.
