Did you purchase it from McAfee, or did you get it free from an internet
service provider? The antivirus software must be fully Windows XP
compatible, and make use of various system calls to announce its status to
the Windows Security Center. Not all versions are fully compatible.

Hi All,

I am using Macfee and it is updated up to date. But from some reason
I see the Windows Alert Icon.

Any idea?

Thanks,

Joe

It's probably because your date settings are wrong.

Well, at least we don't have to look at his post at the top of the OE window
for too much longer unlike the one that will sit there until August (prior
to removing it.)

I'm also ROFL but with the AVG software (I use it too) you do have to turn
of the alert in reference to antivirus software. Had to do on all my
systems. Unfortunately MS doesn't apparently recognize AVG free as a valid
AV software.

You are right, you do get what you pay for (in most circumstances but not
with MacAfee. Two different updated computers let an old Trojan in that
were running MacAfee. I had to run other companies' software to get rid of
it then downloaded and ran AVG. Kept the garbage out.)

WinXP SP2's Security Center recognizes and can monitor both AVG AV v7.1 and
v7.5...but I still wouldn't recommend AVG AV.

Just select the unwanted message and hit the Del key in OE. The message
is gone. It gets deleted from the local message store but its message
ID remains in history so it won't get downloaded again (unless you reset
the newsgroup so wipe it clean and download it all over again).

May be true PA Bear, but with all my systems properly updated, Win Security
Center still said that there was no AV software installed. What is your
dislike of AVGs AV program? I have been more than satisfied with it since
it is free and MacAfee's is so flawed that it can't find problems that the
free stuff can. Give good reason and I may switch. The one that I really
can't stand is Panda's products. Their AV program failed on all of my
computers after purchasing a 3 year 5 system license. They wouldn't help
and wouldn't prorate a refund.

We've seen this elsewhere, usually caused by an incomplete or "dirty"
uninstall of one or more previous AV apps.

It's missing too much and misidentifying too many things when compared to
other AV apps, including the free AntiVir and Avast4. It's just not cutting
the mustard these days IMHO.

PA Bear, thanks for the follow-up info.
