Last year I upgraded to Win XP - Home Edition that I purchased. Everythings been working well until 2 days ago
I turned on my pc to an empty desktop (no icons, no toolbars - just my wallpapered background)

First an error message appeared stating I ran out of "virtual memory"
Then a window appeared with instruction for activating windows. At the time, I had no internet connectivity so I called the toll free number on the screen. I was required to recite the five sets of 6 digits that appeared on the screen. Then I was instructed to type in (I guess to replace) five sets of 6 digits that was given to me by the automated phone attendant

My pc is working now, but hindsight being what it is, the thought has occured to me that maybe my pc was hijacked
I mean I don't understand why I would be required to activate my windows again

Is this something I need to worry about

Thanks for any advise/wisdom

Hi Patchi,

Last year I upgraded to Win XP - Home Edition that I purchased. Everythings been working well until 2 days ago.
I turned on my pc to an empty desktop (no icons, no toolbars - just my wallpapered background).

First an error message appeared stating I ran out of "virtual memory".
Then a window appeared with instruction for activating windows. At the time, I had no internet connectivity so I called the toll free number on the screen. I was required to recite the five sets of 6 digits that appeared on the screen. My pc is working now, but hindsight being what it is, the thought has occured to me that maybe my pc was hijacked?
I mean I don't understand why I would be required to activate my windows again.

Is this something I need to worry about?

Thanks for any advise/wisdom.

Perform a scan looking for viruses at any one of these sites:
Trend Micro HouseCall:
http://housecall.antivirus.com/pc_housecall/

Panda Active Scan:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan/

RAV AntiVirus Online Virus Scan
http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/

BitDefender Free Online Virus Scan
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/license.php

Also perform a scan looking for malware using updated ad-aware and
spybot:
Ad-aware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

Spybot S&D
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?lang=en&page=download

You can try using Hijack this to get a snapshot of your system when it
is working correctly, just scan and click "add checked to the ignore
list"
When a trouble comes up, perform another scan and you have a short
list of suspicious entries which you can search fast in Google:
http://www.computercops.biz/downloads-cat-14.html
http://209.133.47.12/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe

Good luck

Roger
Thanks for the advise. I did run a spybot and browser hijack blaster scan and came up clean
I check the other sites that you mentioned
Thanks.
