I ran an upgrade to XP Home Edition from Windows98. The
upgrade seemed to go fine, but now whenever I launch an
Office app (XP version, from prior upgrade) it launches an
installation program and then I get an error message that
the installation package STDRET.MSI cannot be found, then
I get error 1706. I can cancel out and the app will end
up starting, but it's a pain to go through the process
every time.

Thanks!

Stan,

You might have better luck posting this on the microsoft.public.office.setup
newsgroup. The MVPs that hang out there have a lot more expertise with
Office than we do.

Otherwise, with very limited expertise with your problem I can only suggest
two alternatives for you:
- Run a re-install of Office XP so that it will repair any problems in your
current install.
- Uninstall Office XP and then re-install Office XP.

I did a quick search of the MS KB for STDRET.MSI and "error 1706" and found
very many possibilities but nothing that came out and struck me.

Again, best expertise is in the Office ngs.
