Win98 PC cannot access XP pro shares on domain

My domain consists of a mixture of Win XP, 2000 and legacy
Win 98 pcs. Most seem to be able to connect to shared
directory's without problems but a laptop that has been
returned from overseas and is now connected to the domain
cannot access shares on the XP/2000 machines with the
exception of the servers. When attempting to connect to a
share or shared printer he is presented with a prompt to
enter password for IPC$ share. Appart from connecting to
shares everything else seems ok, antivirus signatures
update ok and the outlook client can connect to the
exchange server.

I have tested the user account on a different 98 pc and it
works ok.
I have removed and reinstalled LAN drivers, file and print
sharing and TCP/IP settings.
On a host 2000 PC I have checked the netlogon service is
running and dropped the LSA restrict annonymous registry
setting down to 0. I have created a share with everyone
full control for share permissions and security.
I have checked that the ICF service is not running on a XP
machine.
I have seen some articles on the web regarding net use
with the user switch. Is this to used on the client pc or
host. The 98 client doesn't recognise /user: as a switch
but the 2000/XP pcs do. Net use \\pcname\ipc$ will give a
prompt for password but I don't know what password it
requires, I have tried local administrator account and
logged on user, even network administrator.
Any ideas why 1 pc should be affected and others connect
without problems.

TIA
Regards
Paul

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your posting here.

Please try the following suggestions.

Choice 1
---------
On the Win98 computer, when you see the "Enter Network Password" window
during logon, please input the same user name (i.e administrator) and
password (i.e nothing) as the one used on the Win2000 computer. Also be
sure on the share folder of the Win2000 computer, the appropriate
permission is assigned to this user account.

Choice 2
--------
On the Win2000 computer, create a user with the same user name and password
you use on the Win98 computer. Also be sure on the share folder of the
Win2000 computer, the appropriate permission is assigned to this user
account. NOTE: To check the user name used on the Win98 computer, after
you log into Win98, click Start, there is an entry: "Log Off <XXX>". <XXX>
is the current user name.

Have a nice day!

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the reply. The first choice couldn't be used as
there is no where to enter the username, but the second
method has worked thank you. However, I don't understand
why it is necessary to set up a local user account for one
win98 machine whereas all other machines I have looked at
seem to access shares without problem. Also this would
need to be done on any XP machine that needed to be
accessed. Do you have any idea why the machine can't
access the shares in the first place.

Many Thanks
Paul

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your update.

If it is a local user account, Windows 2000/XP will validate user account
locally not from the Windows 98 computer. If the password is not same, then
it will not connect.

Please refer to the following article.

258938 Network Clients Prompted for Password Connecting to Share on Windows

In addition, you can also check the following settings.

1) Right mouse click on Network neighbor hood and choose properties,
2) Select the client for Microsoft networks and choose properties,
3) On the configuration tab, general section in the . windows nt domain box
Type the right name of the domain.
4) Then also check under the identification tab check to see if the domain
name is under the workgroup name.

Thank you for using our newsgroup.
