Jared

I have a laptop running windows 98se and a pc running
windows xp pro. Both are set up for file sharing and in
the same workgroup. In network neighborhood on the pc with
xp, I can see both the pc and laptop. On the laptop in
network neighborhood, I can only see the laptop listed.
One other thing I made sure of is that I am logged on as
the user and password. I'm stumped. What can it be? Thanks

Are you using a firewall? Have you checked the settings?

Hi Jared,
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe from W98 installed on
FAT32 it is not possible to see XP installed on NTFS partition, if that is
how you have it (default I think). If that's what it is don't bother with
firewall specs or admin login, this will make no difference.

You can see XP using NTFS over network, but on local computer with dual boot
W98 cannot accees NTFS partitions without additional software.

A firewall is one thing to block access. You can also hide wxp from network.
Even if you cannot see xp from network, can you still access the xp? From
start->run try \\xp\c$ where xp is name your xp computer. If that fails try
also using tcp/ip address of your xp like \\10.0.0.1\c$.

Windows 98 can see files stored on a NTFS partition on a separate networked
computer running XP if some (but no limited to) of the following conditions
are met: XP must have netbios installed, and a user account must be set up
for the WIN 98 computer. Go to http://www.wown.net for full instructions on
how to network windows 98 and XP together. (It worked for me)
