What is win32 and what does it do?

In my Firewall (ZoneAlarm) settings for Program Control I have

Generic Host Process for Win32 services
Access Trusted – Allow
Access Internet – Allow
Server Trusted – Allow
Server Internet – Block

I have received messages “Generic Host Process for Win32 services was
blocked from accessing the Internetâ€. However, I am advised not to apply any
custom settings to system programs.

Is this ok?

Generic Host Process for Win32 Services
Also known as: svchost.exe

Svchost.exe is a program that loads Windows services that are in the form of
dynamic-link libraries (DLLs). It is possible for more than one svchost.exe to
be running at one time, with more than one service being controlled by that process.

In plain English, if there is another executable using it, such as
winsvc32.exe, ntspcv.exe, etc., then it's malware using the Host Process.

Thanks for clear explanation. My question now is simply, are the pre-set
(system?) settings below for Internet access correct? ie. In my Firewall
(ZoneAlarm) settings for Program Control I have - Generic Host Process for
Win32 services - Server Internet – Block (which I think is ok as it was
pre-set, but is it?)

Thanks MowGreen

Unless you're experiencing problems with programs (that you want on your
computer) being unable to run due to lack of access to the Internet, I'd say
leave it as default. For the most part, ZoneAlarm's presets work quite
nicely.

Win32 is just the generic form name for the Windows 32-bit operationg
system.

Originally, it was called Win16.

I suppose soon we will see Win64.
