at the ms website, under malicious software, i saw Win32/Mywife.E@mm. it
said if u find the file %windir%\system32\Update.exe delete it. i search
it and it gave me three file names---gpupdate, update.exe.ref, and ACUpdate.
it also stated it should be marked- read-only and hidden but they are not
marked. should i delete these files? my anti-viruse software (it is up to
date) is not finding these files. i have sp2.
thanks

that file is not a systems file. But as you beleive, it should not be on
your pc. Just because a virus protector didn't pick up on it,
there are probably other protectors that will, hence the
free market and access to virus data.

I bet if you try other antivirus, including anti spyware and anti adware and
registry cleaners, it will be discovered and destroyed. Also, keep in mind
that sometimes just deleting the file is not enough because you may have
something on your machine generating it and will likely recreate it upon
your next boot.

Even though everyone in the "whole" world has their preferred method of
protecting the pc. I can provide these suggestions that have worked for me.
Some are freeware and a couple are trialwares. The trialwares will give you
that extra edge of finding bad files for 30 days, but afterwards it would be
your
choice to leave them or lovethem....

First, disable all startups from your msconfig via run via startup... (As
there may be
something inthere that shouldn't be. Afterwards don't reboot, instead
download the:

Freeware = MSDefender from microsoft, SpywareTerminator from ??, ClamWin
Free Antivirus from ??
CCleaner from FileHippo.com., Spybot,

Trialware = systemmechanic

Then reboot. All three above can run at the same time. So if you choose to
run additional antivirus softwares,
be sure to temporarily disable the others installed, so that you can
manually run only 1 antivirus runs at any given time.
Afterwards you can disable the ones you like and enable the others....

If you run into any trouble, try running your scans via safemode...

i have used mcafee and windows live onecare. none picked up the files. i will
try the link u suggested.
thanks
