Win2k & WinXP network cross-compatibility

I have eventually started to set up a wired home network (just as everyone
else gets wireless) between a laptop running win2000 and a desktop running
winXP pro (service pack 2 installed). I have completed the network setup
wizard, and then found out that the disk created here doesn't work on win2k
(thanks for that, microsoft). As a result of that (or maybe as a result of
something else - please advise!), I can't seem to get the network up and
running. The harware detects itself and the network (that is to say,the
lights turn green on the two NIC's, the hardware wizard reports all devices
as running correctly, the LAN connection shows as 'connected' on both
systems, and there are no conflics reported anywhere) - however neither of
the computers will recognise the other as existing. According to the LAN
staus, there is some sort of data transfer between the two computers, however
on network neighbourhood (or my network places, or whatever), neither
computer will show the other. The protocols should be correct (any help here
would be appreciated), and the harware works. In fact, the only thing I am
sure of is that the harware works. I have attempted to set up connections
with every configuration imaginable, and have changed just about every
conceivable variable. How can it be so hard to connect two computers running
two microsoft operating systems? For all the time and effort I have spent on
this, I could have bought another computer and got a second broadband line
installed seperately - I'm sick of the rest of the family dominating my
internet connection, and I want to play online poker in peace... please help
:-(

can you ping each other? also make sure no firewall block the file sharing

Dann,

Windows 2000 and Windows XP will network just fine. Be patient with yourself.

One of the most common causes of this problem would be a misconfigured or
overlooked personal firewall, but there are other possibilities too. What
antivirus product do you use?

If no help yet, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, so we can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely:
