Hello,

I am trying to reinstall Windows 2000 Pro on my notebook, but I cannot get
it right. I must be doing something wrong.

Here is the thing: when I install Windows 2000 Pro and boot in standalone
mode, ie. not hooked up to the network, it works like a charm. I have access
to all my applications and all my files. However, the minute I connect to
the network (via a wired Ethernet connection and as a member of the domain),
it takes 22 minutes to log on, spending lots of time "Applying computer
settings" and "Loading your personal settings". Furthermore, when I finally
have access to the computer, my personal files are gone and none of the
Microsoft Office applications want to work; they all prompt me to reinstall
everything.

I must have done something wrong. Is there somebody kind enough to point me
in the right direction? I don't mind reinstalling once more if I have to.

Three little letters -- D, N and S.

I bet you're logging in to an Active Directory network and you have your DNS
settings pointing to your ISP rather than the DNS Server hosting your AD
network.

Hope this helps

Oli,

Well, that could be part of the answer. I will have to verify that. But what
about the disappearing files and applications that don't want to run?

Phil

PS - I verified the event viewer and I think you put me on the right path as
there seems to be a DNS problem. Here are the errors I am getting:

------------------------

Attempt to update HOST Service Principal Names (SPNs) of the computer object
in Active Directory failed. The updated values were '<UNAVAILABLE>' and
'<UNAVAILABLE>'. The following error occurred:
The RPC server is unavailable.

------------------------

Attempt to update DNS Host Name of the computer object in Active Directory
failed. The updated value was 'brup.home.net'. The following error occurred:
The RPC server is unavailable.

If you're logging in with a local account at home and a domain account at
work, then the two profiles are different and you would not see the other
user's personal files.

When you have everything working, I'd recommend using the domain account
only. You'll be able to log in using cached credentials while you are away
from the office.

As far as Office is concerned, I suspect that some components are not
installed correctly and it's trying to reinstall them. Office can be a pain
about this. Once you've got everything else sorted, I'd recommend posting
to an Office setup newsgroup about that specific problem. People there will
have more knowledge of what tends to go wrong with Office setup.
