I have access to a UNIX server over a network and it stores thousands of PDF
files.

When I use Win Explorer to search sometimes it works and other times it does
not find anything, not even *.pdf

even when viewing where the files are they dont always comeup in sequence
either asending or decending even if you click the file name column.

My experience with XP's search function is that it isn't very good. I
install the free Agent Ransack on all my XP machines.

How does the Windows XP see the Unix? SMB protocol (Samba) or NFS
(Network File System?)

Thanks, I will have the owner go check for updates, she was sort of blind
sided with this, the previoius admin sort of jumped ship and tossed the stuff
over the wall and she has no idea what to do with most of the problems but
she is hanging tough and making the best of it "S"

Thanks again

Please note that Samba is usually "open source" and there is not
direct support for it. Most of the support is provided by newsgroups,
usually.

Thanks I will let her know that,

is it polite to ask on here what a good user group is for samba?

Usually, you search for the newsgroup(s) for the version of Unix /
Linux that the "server" is using, first. Then, you might be able to
check here:

linux . samba

I'll do that, thanks again

We have a similar situation, but the PDFs are on a network share on a Windows
server. And it does not affect all users, just the ones with a newer image.
All of the desktop images have Windows XP SP-2 installed exactly the same
way, so we're puzzled.

One division stores sensitive information in PDF documents. They need to
search for text inside the PDF documents. Everyone except for these
particular users can do this. We're not sure why it would be different on the
newer image... any ideas where we can check?

I doubt if our agency will want to install a different application for this,
since it works for most of the people. The other issue is that a large
majority of folks will be receiving new computers with new images this fall!

Thanks!
