WIN XP SHUT DOWN PROBLEM

I have tried installing Windows XP home edition twice and
it shuts downs fine until I download the critical updates.
Every time I download and install those, it no longer
shuts down. I've reformatted my hard drive, installed
Windows, installed the motherboard drivers (Shuttle AK39N)
and then the updates in that order, so there isn't anything
else installed that could be stopping it from shutting down.

Does anybody know what causes this problem and how I can
fix it?

Any help you can give me I would appreciate. Thank you!

Not without knowing more about your system and the problem. Please define,
"It no longer shuts down," what does it do?

A lot of things could cause it, do you have any legacy ISA cards, have you
checked to make sure all the drivers for your various devices are up to
date, you need to check the device manufacturer's websites for updates, do
not rely on Windows Update for this. Sometimes the only way to find the
source of this type of issue is to remove software and hardware items, one
by one and then try shutting down after each one until you find the software
or hardware that is causing the problem.

Have you updated your antivirus application and scanned for viruses? Have
you checked for malware, download, install and run Ad Aware:

Well, it will bring up the shut down box and then when I
click on the shut down button, it will go back to the
desktop and sit there forever. I've given it several
minutes to see if it is just really slow, but it never gets
past the desktop.

Sometimes when I do alt f4 and then hit enter on shutdown
it will work, but even doing that seems to be hit and miss.

As far as the hardware goes, everything is unhooked and
uninstalled. I started this project because I bought a new
200 gig hard drive and then was going to use windows 98 SE,
however, after realizing about the 137 cap using windows
98, I decided to go ahead and upgrade to XP. We unhooked
everything, including the old harddrive, put the new
harddrive in and booted from the XP cd, so we could create
the partition and format the hard drive. After that, we of
course installed windows and the motherboard drivers.
Everything seemed to be working fine until we hooked up to
the internet, downloaded and installed the updates. After
those were installed, we rebooted and then the shut down
problem occured.

One other thing to note, after we installed the updates, I
had a bunch of folders under C:\ that were named random
numbers like Q8J4K3H564HF7B8RJN (this is just an example,
not one of the actual names). Under each folder was a
download folder and then in that folder, one file that
looked like a .dll file, but with a second extension, so
filename.dll._9 or something like that.

From reading this, could it be that you carried stuff over from your
98SE ? I had problems as well initially after an upgrade from 98SE,
caused by carry-over. Have you tried a clean install? If not my
suggestion is to do so. Back up all your valuable data, and reboot
from the XP CD. Choose a clean install. It will prompt you for your
previous Windows (98SE or earlier) disk to verify your eligibility to
upgrade.
But a clean install is *soooo* much better then an install over an
older 98SE version.
I had issues at boot, and at shutdown, and everything in between until
I followed the advice to do a fresh, clean install. Take into account
this process may take a few hours. But it is really worth it.
Good luck

I actually bought the full version of XP and did the clean,
full install right from the start. I didn't do the
upgrade. My old hard drive that has everything on it isn't
even in the computer. I just have the brand new 200 gig
hard drive in there. So, basically, it's a new computer
with nothing on it.

First, make sure your antivirus software is up to date and run a virus scan
on your system. Second, check for malware, download, install and run Ad
Aware, www.lavasoftusa.com.

Also, while at the XP desktop, place the XP CD in the drive, when the setup
screen appears, select "Check System Compatibility." The report it
generates may give a clue as to the source of the issue.

You don't say if you updated the drivers for any of your hardware. You
could not disconnect your graphics card as that is required for booting. If
you didn't check the manufacturer's website for updated drivers, that could
be an issue.

Being a Windows 9x system, if you have any ISA cards as opposed to PCI,
soundcard or any other such card in an ISA slot that can cause problems with
shutdown and rebooting.
