Installed XP and tried the search function, which did not work.
Other functions are working great.
Hope gurus here help me.

XP Patches are all installed up to todays ones. It's a Japanese
version, though.

[Problem:]
Open the search window for files and folders. Give, say, "hosts" in
the filename field. Hit the search button.
A one inch size dialog window pops up immediatly in the right pain.
That says "Search Assist" at the top line and consists of an
exclamation mark and the OK button. (well, it's not OK.)
Hit the OK button. The dialog window disappers, but nothing happen.
No disk asscess takes place up to this point.

[What I did so far:]
1. Searched web sites by Google, in vain.
2. Set the profile to "no assist", as I thought display of dog may
have some mulfunction, to no avail.
3. Went into regedit, and set Explorer/CabinetState key with the value
of "User Search Asst = no". This brings XP search window back to
Win2k level.
After hitting the search button, the small icon with a lens turns
a couple of seconds, then stops. No disk access either.

Look in the hidden windows\Inf folder for the srchasst.inf file. Right
click on it and take install, to re-install the Search assistant

Thanks ssg and Alex, but it did not work.

I was wrong about the first information. The dialog window's name
was not "Search Assist" but

"Search Companion"

in fact.
Any more hints?
